Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Ms. Julia Gillard, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia on the margins of the 67th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Ms. Julia Gillard, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia.


They discussed issues concerning recent developments in Afghanistan and Australia’s military support; strengthening of the partnership between the UN and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF); the political achievements in Timor Leste; the democratic transition in Fiji; and the escalating conflict in Syria. The Secretary-General emphasized the important role Australia has played on peace and security issues in the Pacific region and beyond.


They agreed on the great importance of advancing Secretary-General’s Education First Initiative.
