Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E Malam Bacai Sanha, President of Guinea-Bissau, in the margins of the 65th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met today with President Malam Bacai Sanha in the margins of the General Assembly debate. This is the first time that the Secretary-General has met President Sanha since his election in 2009 and the Secretary-General used the occasion of their meeting to formally congratulate him on his success at the polls. He noted the efforts being made by the President and by the Government to consolidate democracy, to reform Guinea-Bissau's security sector as well as develop the country's economic and fiscal management systems. The discussion also touched on the internal security situation, national efforts to fight impunity, the country's engagement with the Peacebuilding Commission and preparations for the “National Conference on Conflicts in Guinea-Bissau” scheduled for January 2010.
