The Secretary-General today met with President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.
The discussions focused on preparations for the country's elections scheduled to take place next year. Given that President Jonathan is the current Chairman of ECOWAS, the Secretary-General also took the opportunity to discuss a number of regional issues including concerns over delays in the holding of planned elections in Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea, continuing concerns over the situation in Guinea-Bissau and the progress being made in Liberia's peacebuilding efforts.
President Jonathan raised the need for the international community to assist in curtailing the proliferation of small arms in Africa. The Secretary-General commended Nigeria for its support to UN peacekeeping operations.
