The Secretary-General met with H.E. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, President of Chile. He expressed condolences to those who lost family and friends during the recent earthquake in Chile. They discussed the importance of disaster risk reduction, which had greatly contributed to reducing the number of victims.
The Secretary-General applauded Chile’s commitment to reaching a meaningful climate change agreement in December. He thanked Chile for its strong support for the post-2015 development agenda. He particularly commended President Bachelet’s leadership in promoting women’s rights.
The Secretary-General also appreciated Chile’s strong support for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). He exchanged views with President Bachelet on the political situation and future UN engagement in the country.
