The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Yang Jiechi, State Councilor of the People's Republic of China. They discussed key issues including Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Change, and the Financing for Development Agenda. They also touched upon important events at the upcoming General Assembly. The Secretary-General and State Councilor exchanged views on the critical situation in Yemen and Syria.
The Secretary-General commended China’s constructive role around the reducing tension in the Korean Peninsula. He encouraged China to support United Nations humanitarian work in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The Secretary-General underscored his commitment to support meaningful engagement and dialogue on the DPRK.
They exchanged views on the Iran nuclear issue and on the need to counter violent extremism. The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for China’s support for the work of the United Nations.
