The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The Secretary-General thanked the President for convening members of the international community to the Conference on Afghanistan. He stressed the unity of the international community in supporting Afghanistan for the long term. The Secretary-General expressed concern about the security situation in Afghanistan and noted that the United Nations, through its Mission (UNAMA), will continue to work with the Afghan Government towards a sustainable peace. The Secretary-General insisted on the Afghan ownership of the peace process which should be inclusive. He commended the Afghan Government for its effort towards national reconciliation.

The Secretary-General also called on Afghanstan to continue on the road to full inclusion of all, especially women, in all aspects of life, and that respect for human rights must be a cornerstone of government policy.
