Secretary-General's Remarks On Receiving The Russian Federation's Instrument Of Ratification For The 1997 Kyoto Protocol To The United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change

Press events | Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General

SG: This is indeed a historic occasion. Not just for the countries that have ratified the Protocol, but for the whole world.

Now we need to intensify our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and I hope even the countries which have not joined yet will make efforts in that direction.

I think this is a great day for the whole world.

Without controlling climate change, I don't think we stand a chance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals and arresting environmental degradation.

And so I am very very happy, and I am grateful to President Putin for his leadership and the decision that he took to ratify the Protocol.

Thank you, Ambassador [Denisov]
