Mr. Mallam Tijjani Musa Isa, the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria,

Excellencies,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a pleasure to participate in this 52nd Annual Accountants’ Conference.

I welcome your focus on Adopting Sustainability for Economic Prosperity.

Our world is facing challenges in all fronts.

Social inequalities have increased: in economic growth, access to jobs, education and health care.

Climate change continues to threaten lives and livelihoods, particularly in Africa.

The time for action is now.

Today’s event provides a platform for public institutions, UN and private sector partners to work together towards a healthy and prosperous Nigeria.

The private sector, which was involved when the Sustainable Development Goals were developed, must now be fully engaged in achieving these goals.

Businesses have a lot to offer in mobilizing financing, bringing corporate strategies in line with the SDGs, and enhancing the use of technology to unlock the potential of developing economies.

And they have been stepping-up, including by pledging to adopt net-zero emission pathways and other sustainable practices.

I encourage all companies, that have not already done so, to sign the Ten Principles of the Global Compact. The Ten Principles have never been more relevant than today. They are key to sustainable economic prosperity, and it is important that companies adopt these principles into their business practices.

Accountants play a key role in ensuring that companies take environmental, social and governance factors seriously, and promoting transparency and accountability.

I urge you to make full use of these talents to fully contribute to achieving the SDGs, and I wish you a fruitful conference.

Thank you.
