Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
My deep appreciation to the government of Italy for convening this timely meeting.
The 2022 State of Food Security and Nutrition report revealed that hunger is surging in the world.
As many as 828 million people may have suffered hunger last year – with Africa bearing the heaviest burden.
Projections show that we could still be facing chronic hunger in 2030 at the same levels as in 2015 – the year we launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
We must do better.
And we can do better.
Last year’s UN Food Systems Summit crystalized consensus around the need to transform our food systems, improve food security and nutrition, and thereby accelerate delivery of the SDGs.
The Global Crises Response Group has come up with concrete recommendations to address global food insecurity, including:
That is why we are working to support countries in their long-term food system transformations and strengthen their resilience to future shocks.
With the establishment of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, we have opened lines of communication with national food system convenors, who are leading these efforts in their countries.
They told us loud and clear that they need support with means of implementation, particularly finance, to make their food systems more efficient and resilient.
They have asked for technical solutions, knowledge, innovation, thought leadership and science to unlock the power of food system transformation to overcome short- and long-term food security challenges and deliver on the SDGs.
And, last but not least, they are asking for support in establishing benchmarks to measure the progress and impact of their transformation efforts.
Our Coordination Hub brings together the assets and expertise of the entire UN system. I urge the donor community to support the Hub in this critical endeavor and to use existing mechanisms to support Member States though the Hub.
Together, we can overcome the current crisis and get back on track to achieve the SDGs.
Thank you.

The Global Crises Response Group has come up with concrete recommendations to address global food insecurity, including:
- Removing export restrictions in food and energy
- Lowering freight prices to stabilize international food commodity markets
- Ensuring small-holder producers can maintain decent livelihoods
- Implementing targeted social protection measures to help the most vulnerable
- And above all: avoiding ad-hoc policy responses.
