Objectives:
The World Maritime University (WMU) and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) are at the forefront of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s capacity-building strategy, supporting postgraduate maritime and oceans education, legal, professional and research training in order to maintain a cadre of high-level managers, senior maritime officials, legal-drafters, policy-makers and other key personnel in the maritime sectors.
The innovative MPhil programme has been designed in partnership by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) two sister institutions, WMU and IMLI, to play a part in ensuring the future sustainability of the world’s oceans in accordance with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The two-year programme is designed to train expert maritime lawyers, immersed in the UN system structure and goals, who can advocate for the policies and legislation to transform the world’s oceans and support their sustainable development. The two-year programme offers students the chance to spend their first academic year in Malmö, following WMU's specialized programme in Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management , and the second academic year in Malta, following IMLI's International Maritime Law programme.
