The Summit of the Future and the Pact for the Future are not just lofty ideals; they are our roadmap to a better tomorrow. The robust engagement we witnessed at the preparatory meeting, as well as throughout this process, is a testament to the enduring power of #multilateralism.

What is the UN Summit of the Future

What is the UN Summit of the Future?

The Summit of the Future: multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow will be hosted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 22-23 September 2024.  The goal is to agree on a concise, action-orientated Outcome Document (“A Pact for the Future”) in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations and endorsed by Heads of State/Government at the Summit.

With UNGA-resolution adopted on 8 September 2022 setting out the modalities for the Summit of the Future, further planning is to take place at the HLPF this July and the SDG Summit in September 2023.

Scope of the Summit

The General Assembly, reaffirming the Charter of the United Nations, and recalling its resolution 76/307 of 8 September 2022 on the modalities of the Summit of the Future, in which it decided that the Summit of the Future would adopt a concise, action-oriented outcome document entitled “A Pact for the Future”, agreed in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations. The aim of the Summit is twofold:

This will be achieved through an action-oriented outcome document called the Pact for the Future.

The Pact will be negotiated and endorsed by countries in the lead-up to and during the Summit in September 2024.

The result will be a world – and an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and, in the future, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations.

Paving the Way to the Sumit of the Future- UNGA Sustainability Week

The SDG Summit 2023 | United Nations

The 2023 SDG Summit took place on 18-19 September 2023 in New York. It marked the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals with high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to 2030.

Convened by the President of the General Assembly, the Summit marked the half-way point to the deadline set for achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. It was the centerpiece of the High-level Week of the General Assembly. It responded to the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world and is expected to reignite a sense of hope, optimism, and enthusiasm for the 2030 Agenda.

The opening of the General Debate

On September 19, 2023, the President of the General Assembly delivered remarks at the opening of the General Debate (78th Session.

He said:

The SDG Summit was only the start of what is a full agenda during this High-Level Week.

It naturally interlinks with the General Assembly’s HighLevel Dialogue on Financing for Development – which is key to accelerating the financing impetus for the SDGs.

The preparatory ministerial meeting for the Summit for the Future will help to launch the negotiations of the Pact for the Future – giving guidance on how to ensure the United Nations is fit for purpose in the twenty-first century.

It will give Member States the opportunity to come together, and to transform our shared future”.

UNGA Sustainability Week (15-19 April 2024)

As we passed the critical milestone of the mid-point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, impactful transformation remains central to the ongoing efforts to advance all three dimensions of sustainable development – social, economic, and environmental – to achieve peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all. Among others, COVID-19, conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and humanitarian crises in various parts of the world have posed severe challenges to these efforts and derailed implementation of the SDGs by 2030. Building on the momentum gained from the September 2023 SDG Summit is important in effectively tackling the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

In this regard, the President of the General Assembly for its seventy-eighth session, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, convene the  the first-ever Sustainability Week, at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 15-19 April 2024.

Gayap Dialogues

President of the General Assembly, H.E Dennis Francis, convened  Gayap Dialogues for the upcoming Summit of the Future on November 28, 2023, and April 11, 2024.

They discussed some of the key questions for ensuring a successful and inclusive Summit in September. The Summit is not an end in and of itself, but the start of a journey toward a stronger multilateral system driving SDG progress.

SIDS are among the countries most anxious about their future, as climate change and sea level rise pose a grave and imminent danger to their communities.

At the Summit of The Future, our ambitions must be bold and actionable enough to secure sustainable prosperity for SIDS and the rest of the world alike. #OurCommonFuture #SoTF

Had a productive meeting with H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Foreign Minister.

We discussed critical issues like accelerating implementation of the SDGs, education, climate change, sea level rise, peace and security and the vital role of small states in global multilateralism. I count on Singapore’s continued support for the upcoming Summit of the Future in September and its key outcome documents, including the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact.

Permanent Mission of Namibia

I was honored, while in Namibia, to participate in a roundtable discussion on debt sustainability and the reform of the international financial architecture. There was broad agreement that the current situation is untenable and opportunities, such as the #SummitOfTheFuture, must be leveraged.
