President of UN General Assembly to attend Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Awaza, Turkmenistan
New York, 1 August 2025 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, will travel to Awaza, Turkmenistan, to attend the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3), which will take place from 5 to 8 August 2025.
The Conference offers a unique opportunity to explore solutions and forge partnerships, addressing the special challenges and unlocking the full potential of the 32 Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) for a more equitable and prosperous future. Lack of direct territorial access to the sea, isolation from world markets and high trade costs impose serious constraints on the development of the LLDCs.
The President will deliver remarks at the Opening Segment of the Conference. He will highlight the important role of the General Assembly in the implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action, the main framework for scaling up action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the LLDCs. He will also attend the Official Welcoming Ceremony hosted by H.E. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the National Leader of the Turkmen People, and speak at the Parliamentary Forum and the Youth Forum.
During the visit, the President will also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Ms. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, the State Minister for International Cooperation of Qatar, and Ms. Rabab Fatima, the UN Under- Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
The costs of the visit are borne by Turkmenistan, the host country and the OPGA Trust Fund.
