Transcript of the Press Briefing by the Spokesperson of the President of the UN General Assembly

The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today’s briefing.
Good afternoon, everyone
We are approaching election time
- The election for the President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly takes place on 2 June at 10 am. A media stakeout is being organised. We will come back with specifics shortly.
- The election of the Vice Presidents of the General Assembly and the elections of the officers of the Main Committees also take place on that day.
- The election of the 5 non-permanent members of the Security Council will be held on 3 June and there will be a media stakeout after these elections.
- For the UN Economic and Social Council, the election of 18 new members takes place on 4 June.

The Election of a new member of the International Court of Justice took place this morning. We wish to congratulate Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud of Jordan who was elected by absolute majority by both the General Assembly and the Security Council. He replaces Judge Nawaf Salam of Lebanon who resigned in January.
Meetings this week
- There will be an informal plenary of the General Assembly this afternoon at 3 pm to hear a briefing by the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean Pierre LaCroix and the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary Di Carlo on the review on the future of all forms of UN peace operations.
- Informal consultations on the 2025 World Social Summit take place tomorrow, 28 May.
- And intergovernmental consultations on the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance will be held on 27, 28 May and 29 May.
- Tomorrow, the President will host a seminar on the prevention of sexual harassment and technology facilitated violence against women, for delegates of Permanent missions and Permanent Observers to the United Nations. The discussions will focus on how we can prevent and respond to sexual harassment at the UN, Permanent Missions and externally through our support for initiatives to advance gender equality. The President thanks his Advisory Board on Gender Equality and UN Women for their support in organizing this seminar.
- An informal meeting of the plenary on the intergovernmental negotiations on the question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Council takes place on 29 May.
- A meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly will be held on 30 May.

There will also be informal consultations on the World Summit on the Information Society on 30 May. This will be the first preparatory meeting and stocktaking session with Member States and Observers on the intergovernmentally agreed outcome document, for adoption at the high-level meeting of the GA on the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on Information Society.

Meetings next week
- Informal consultations on the 2025 World Social Summit will be held on 4 and 5 June.
- And at the end of the week, there will also be a debate on the implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the political declarations on HIV/AIDS

- The press briefing on AI global governance, previously scheduled for 29 May, has been postponed.
