Press Statement
Statement by the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Philemon Yang, on the second anniversary of the Sudanese conflict
Tuesday 15 April marks the second anniversary of the brutal war in Sudan.
Bombings and targeted attacks on densely populated areas have killed many civilians, injured thousands, and damaged critical civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and IDP camps.
I condemn the repeated attacks against civilians, especially women and children. I call on all parties to end the grave violations of international humanitarian law and to protect civilians in line with their obligations under international law.
I am also very concerned about the obstruction of humanitarian aid. Some 25 million people – half of Sudan’s population – are now facing extreme hunger. Isolating civilians from life-saving assistance and basic services like medical supplies is unacceptable.
I call on the parties to the conflict to immediately halt the fighting, silence the guns and return to dialogue to achieve a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict.
I welcome all international efforts, including the conference on Sudan in London, to bring this devastating conflict to an end and to facilitate a political solution.
The people of Sudan deserve to live in peace, security and human dignity.
