President of the UN General Assembly to undertake official travel 

 to Japan and India 

 

New York, 28 January 2025– The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, will undertake an official visit to Japan and India from 31 January to 8 February 2025, at the invitation of the respective governments. 

 

The President of the General Assembly will seek to strengthen and promote multilateral cooperation with Japan and India on a range of global issues, including international peace and security and the Pact for the Future. 

 

Japan (31 January – 4 February 2025) 

 

In Japan, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Ishiba, in Tokyo. He will also meet with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Takeshi Iwaya, and have a separate meeting with the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Akihiko Tanaka, during his visit. 

President Yang will visit Hiroshima, where he will pay his respects at the cenotaph for the atomic bomb victims and lay a wreath. He will tour the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, listen to a talk by a “hibakusha” (a survivor of the atomic bomb) and meet with the Mayor of Hiroshima. The President will also engage with youth at a meeting hosted by the United Nations University. 

India (4-8 February 2025) 

 

In India, President Yang will visit New Delhi and Bengaluru and hold bilateral engagements, including a courtesy call on the President of India, H.E. Ms. Droupadi Murmu and a meeting with the External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. 

The President will also visit a public health facility in Gautam Buddha Nagar; the Infosys Campus and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru as well as other sites in New Delhi and Bengaluru.  

The President will also meet the UN Country Team, led by the UN Resident Coordinator in India, Mr. Shombi Sharp, to learn more about the work of the UN system on the ground and its collaboration with the Government of India. 

The costs of the visit are borne by the Governments of Japan and India respectively and the OPGA Trust Fund.
