Press Statement

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the President of the UN General Assembly on ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas

The President of the UN General Assembly welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The end of the war in Gaza has been long overdue.

He commends Qatar, the United States and Egypt for brokering the ceasefire agreement. He calls on all parties to fully respect and implement the terms of the agreement. The ceasefire must hold firm and lead to a lasting halt of the fighting.

In the past 15 months, tens of thousands of civilians have died, millions have been displaced and civilian infrastructure has been massively destroyed in Gaza. The killing and maiming of civilians must stop. All the remaining hostages must be released. Humanitarian organizations must immediately be given full, safe and unhindered access to deliver badly needed assistance in large scale to the civilian population in Gaza. Displaced Palestinians must be able to return home.

The President of the UN General Assembly stresses that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved through endless violence and occupation. The international community must take meaningful action towards the realization of a two-State solution in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions.

In this regard, the President of the UN General Assembly underscores the importance of the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, which will take place in June 2025.
