President of UN General Assembly to attend COP29 Climate Conference in Azerbaijan

 

New York, 8 November 2024  – The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Philémon Yang, will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan from 10 – 14 November 2024 to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

 

One of the key objectives at COP29 will be to negotiate a new financial target that aligns with the growing needs of developing countries. While at COP29, President Yang will underscore the UN General Assembly’s commitment to global climate action, stressing the need for increased climate finance to boost implementation, adaptation, and mitigation efforts.

 He will participate in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit and deliver remarks at the Opening of the High-Level Segment attended by Heads of State and Government.

 

President Yang will also deliver keynote remarks at the high-level event on Health and Climate Change, hosted by WHO, UNDP, the COP29 Presidency, and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NJIC). He will advocate for greater focus on the health impacts of climate change and the broader objective of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

During his visit, President Yang will hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resource of Azerbaijan andH.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

 

He will also meet with Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.

 

He will meet former Presidents of the UN General Assembly at the invitation of H.E. Ms. Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Former President of Latvia and Co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, and Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa, 73rd President of the General Assembly.

 

The costs of the visit are borne by the Government of Azerbaijan and the OPGA Trust Fund.
