UNITAR Briefing for Delegates on the 79th Session of the General Assembly and the Main Committees

Excellencies,
Distinguished Delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
A warm welcome to you all.
I would like to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to UNITAR, the Forum of Small States (FOSS), and the Permanent Mission of Singapore for organizing this important briefing.
I would even call it a conversation.
This briefing has become an essential opportunity for diplomats to prepare for the complexities of multilateral diplomacy, offering invaluable insights into the workings of the General Assembly and its Main Committees.
This year holds particular significance.
The 79th session of the General Assembly will lay the groundwork for decisions that will shape the future of our United Nations.
In addition to the annual General Debate, we will witness several critical events, including a High-Level meeting on the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, and the Summit of the Future—an essential and highly anticipated effort to revitalize global multilateralism.
During this session, the General Assembly will address several key mandates.
These mandates include reform of the Security Council, revitalization of the General Assembly itself, the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, the Fourth High-Level Conference on Communicable Diseases, and the implementation of the Pact for the Future, which we strongly anticipate will soon be adopted.
Each of these mandates will play a crucial role in shaping the future we all desire.
The need for global cooperation has never been more urgent, and the effective contributions of all delegations will be vital to ensuring productive outcomes.
This session must be defined by bold ambition and decisive action.
This is where the United Nations, and the General Assembly, play a crucial role.
The Main Committees are integral to that role and must help transform policies into concrete action.
The work you do in the Committees will form the backbone of our efforts during the 79th session.
The outcomes will not only steer the direction of this Assembly but also influence global action on the many challenges we all face.
I urge you to approach today’s session in the spirit of collaboration, urgency, and determination.
Let our diverse perspectives be our strength and unity, guiding us toward solutions for the profound and complex challenges that lie ahead.
Together, let us seize this moment and shape the future.
