President of UN General Assembly and President of ECOSOC to announce formation of a high-level panel on financial integrity

Who: His Excellency Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President of the General Assembly (Nigeria);
Her Excellency Ms. Mona Juul, President of the Economic and Social Council (Norway);
Panel co-chair: His Excellency Ibrahim Assane Mayaki is the Chief Executive Officer of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) and former Prime Minister of Niger.

What: The President of the General Assembly and the President of ECOSOC will jointly launch the High-level Panel on International Financial Accountability, Transparency and Integrity for Achieving the 2030 Agenda, including the announcement of Panel members. The launch will include an informal interactive dialogue with some Panel members, UN Member States and other stakeholders. The event will be livestreamed on webtv.un.org  

Press conference following noon briefing with some Panel members, will also be livestreamed.

Where: Trusteeship Council Chambers, United Nations, New York and UN press briefing room

When: Monday, 2 March 2020, launch at 10:00-11:30 a.m., press conference at 12:30 p.m. approximately.                       

Why: The world needs to put more effort into preventing financial crimes, creating level playing fields, ending financial opacity, and mobilising resources equitably. The Panel will explore whether further action may be needed in the following areas: financial and beneficial ownership transparency, tax matters, bribery and corruption, confiscation and disposal of the proceeds of crime, money laundering, and the recovery and return of stolen assets.

The Panel will meet at least four times across different regions and produce a report in February 2021.  This report will offer evidence-based recommendations on how to make the systems for financial accountability, transparency and integrity more comprehensive, robust, effective, and universal in approach.
