NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS
ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN NON-ALIGNMENT MOVEMENT CONFERENCE
United Nations, New York, 2 April 2018 – The President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, will participate in the Mid-term Ministerial Conference of the Non- Aligned Movement (NAM), which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 5 to 6 April.
On 5 April, the President will address the opening of the Conference, which will be held under the theme “Promoting international peace and security for sustainable development”. The gathering will bring together NAM member States and other stakeholders to discuss the changing international security environment and current global challenges.
While in Baku, the President is expected to meet with H.E. Mr. Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; H.E. Mr. Elmar Maharram oglu Mammadyarov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan; H.E. Mr. Dr. Hafiz Pashayev, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Rector of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) University; and the United Nations Country Team. He will also address students at the ADA University under the topic “The state of multilateralism”.
The President will travel to Azerbaijan with his Chef de Cabinet, František Ružička; Senior Adviser Abdelghani Merabet and Communications Adviser Katharina Kandt.
Travel costs will be covered by the Trust Fund of the Office of the President of the General Assembly, with some support on the ground being provided by the Government of Azerbaijan.
The President will return to New York on 6 April.
