The President of the 72nd session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, met today with H.E. Mr. Mohamed Asim, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. They discussed the importance of ensuring the fair and equitable representation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) at the United Nations and the need for SIDS voices to be heard in ongoing General Assembly processes. Climate change and its adverse impacts on SIDS were also raised. The Minister congratulated President Lajčák on the success of his high-level event to launch the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028). President Lajčák encouraged the Maldives to engage in his upcoming events on youth and financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in his high-level meeting on peacebuilding and sustaining peace, and on his priorities for the 72nd session.
