PGA Statement on Iraq suicide bombing

As the death toll from Sunday’s suicide bombing in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, rose to 281, according to the Iraqi government, the President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Mogens Lykketoft issued the following statement:
“The mass murder of innocent civilians in Iraq at market places and other public spaces must be met with the utmost condemnation and disgust. Once again it underlines the fact that most civilian casualties as a result of so-called ‘Islamic terror’ are peaceful civilians of Islamic faith. We must never forget this fact. Terrorism is a threat against civilisation everywhere. We must fight it together in the United Nations. States must increase their cooperation to prevent further terrorist attacks. Political and religious leaders must work even closer together against any attempt to turn the fight against terrorism into a battle between world religions.”
