Launch of participation of indigenous peoples

Advisers for indigenous peoplesToday, the President of the UN General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft held a launch briefing on the participation of indigenous peoples at the United Nations. The Resolution 70/232 of 23 December 2015, recognizes the importance of the participation of indigenous peoples in the United Nations decision-making processes on matters affecting their rights requests the President of the General Assembly to conduct consultations on the possible measures to enable the participation of indigenous peoples’ representatives and institutions in the relevant meetings of United Nations bodies affecting them.

In his remarks, President Lykketoft also mentioned the very positive experience of indigenous peoples’ participation at the United Nations to date and encourages the membership to actively engage in the process to move meaningful and effective participation of indigenous peoples’ representatives at the United Nations forward.
