The President of the General Assembly met today with Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). They discussed the fifty-ninth report of the organization for the calendar year 2014, just ahead of its consideration before the General Assembly. The Director General informed the President of the main work areas of the IAEA in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, nuclear safety and security, effective verification of nuclear non-proliferation commitments and in advancing international cooperation in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. They talked about concrete projects promoted by the Agency in relation to health, climate change, food security and environmental protection as well as other areas where nuclear technology can serve a useful tool for assisting the countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
