The Minister of External Relations of Brazil, Mr. Mauro Vieira, welcomed the statement of the President of the General Assembly during the opening of the 70th session and reiterated Brazil’s support of his presidency.

In support of the President’s call for more robust and unified UN relief action, Minister Vieira reiterated Brazil’s full commitment to continue assisting refugees, especially from Syria and Haiti.

The Brazilian Minister reminded Mr. Lykketoft that his country will continue to welcome Syrian refugees, which currently amounts to more than 2,500 individuals. Mr. Vieira welcomed the adoption of the SDGs and referred to Brazil’s recently announced INDC on carbon emissions as ambitious and positive to keeping momentum in the run-up to COP 21 in Paris.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister also expressed expectations that the 70th session may have positive developments for a reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, and for a more transparent selection process of the next UN Secretary-General. The President reaffirmed that while he cannot commit to a specific outcome, he will endeavour to make UN processes run smoothly. Minister Vieira invited the President to visit Brazil in November, on the occasion of the next Internet Governance Forum, which will take place in Joao Pesso.
