Summary

The 2025 reports illustrate that delivering financing for development and durable peace are two sides of the same coin.

The report “Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa” provides an overview of the peace and security landscape in Africa, the continent’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, and the interlinkages between peace and security, development, humanitarian action, and human rights in accelerating progress.

It highlights how persistent and emerging challenges to the rule of law and access to justice hinder economic opportunities, erode social cohesion, and undermine political stability, fuelling conflict and creating opportunities for harmful non-state actors, particularly extremist groups, to fill the void. It also provides examples of people-centred approaches to addressing rule of law challenges on the continent.

The report “Strengthening the National and International Architectures for Financing for Development” underscores the urgent need to overhaul the systems that finance Africa’s development. It shifts the focus from treating the symptoms of underdevelopment to addressing its root causes, placing strong country systems and institutions at the centre of sustainable financing.

It highlights the complementary roles of national, regional and international frameworks—from the African Continental Free Trade Area to a reformed global financial architecture—in creating predictable, resilient and equitable financing for development. Without such integrated reforms, Africa’s path to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 will remain constrained. The report offers actionable recommendations to build a more coherent and effective financing architecture, unlocking the investments needed for inclusive growth, peace and resilience.

Both reports proffer actionable recommendations to advance sustainable development in Africa.
