UNHQ Seminars on Treaty Law and Practice gather Participants from all Regional Groups

On 4 and 5 December 2025, the Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs conducted two Seminars on Treaty Law and Practice at UN Headquarters in New York for representatives and legal advisers of Permanent Missions and as well as international organizations.   The Seminars were conducted in English and in French and brought together participants reflecting a wide geographic distribution in a dynamic exchange.

A total of fifty-one (51) participants from all regional groups attended the seminars.

The Seminar is designed to increase awareness of the diplomatic community on issues pertaining to the international treaty framework. It aims at facilitating the work of Member States in joining multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary General and registering treaties under Article 102 of the Charter.  Members of the Treaty Section discussed the depositary functions of the Secretary-General, as well as the registration and publication of treaties. They also presented case studies, and actively engaged with participants in lively exchanges of views about treaty law and practice.

This year the Seminar also featured a guest presentation by a representative of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime who provided an overview of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime; Strengthening International Cooperation for Combating Certain Crimes Committed by Means of Information and Communications Technology Systems and for the sharing of Evidence in Electronic Form of Serious Crimes.

In addition to offering seminars at UN Headquarters, the Treaty Section also organizes capacity building seminars at the regional level at the request of host Governments and depending on the availability of funds.
