How is climate change affecting Tampico?

Tampico is experiencing the effects of climate change with increasing intensity, posing an urgent challenge to our community. We have seen a rise in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as prolonged heatwaves and torrential rains that often lead to urban flooding. A recent and alarming example was the severe drought we faced in 2024, which put our water security at risk and significantly impacted both the local population and key economic sectors. These changes are also affecting our ecosystems and local biodiversity while worsening the urban heat island effect, making public spaces less hospitable. Shifts in rainfall and temperature patterns are reducing the availability of natural resources and negatively impacting the overall quality of life. Climate change is no longer a distant threat. It is a current reality that demands immediate and sustained action. Recognizing this is the first step toward responsible leadership. In Tampico, we are committed to transforming this challenge into an opportunity, promoting forward-looking policies that strengthen resilience, protect our environment, and secure a sustainable future for the next generations.

What action are you taking to address climate change?

We have adopted a comprehensive approach to addressing climate change, focusing on local action with global impact. In coordination with the Government of the State of Tamaulipas, we are advancing strategic projects such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which will transform the metropolitan public transportation network by offering an efficient, accessible, and low-emission alternative. In addition, a proposed cable car system will connect Tampico with northern Veracruz, diversifying mobility options with a sustainable focus. We also promote non-motorized transportation through a network of bike lanes and public bicycles, with the dual purpose of reducing automobile dependency and fostering a culture of active and healthy mobility. On the environmental front, we are implementing an urban reforestation programme using native species, which not only beautifies the city but also helps mitigate urban heat islands, improve air quality, and create more pleasant microclimates. At the same time, we maintain our green areas using treated water, reinforcing the efficient use of this vital resource.

What are the benefits? Why is it important?

The climate actions we are implementing in Tampico generate broad, long-term benefits that strengthen sustainable urban development. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions through cleaner public transportation and promoting non-motorized mobility, we actively contribute to improved air quality and help mitigate global warming. Urban reforestation with native species and efficient green space management create healthier, more comfortable environments. Economically, our initiatives boost the local economy by creating jobs in infrastructure, maintenance, and environmental services, while also making public spending more efficient through sustainable solutions. Improved transportation systems lower commuting costs for citizens and enhance the city's overall productivity. Socially, these measures foster a more inclusive and equitable city, where public spaces are accessible and safe for everyone. They also strengthen community resilience to extreme climate events by reducing risks and improving our adaptive capacity. Collectively, these actions lay the foundation for a greener, fairer, and more prepared Tampico—one capable of offering a higher quality of life to current residents and future generations alike. Addressing climate change is not just a necessity; it is an opportunity to build a better, more sustainable city for all.
