On behalf of Under-Secretary-General LIU Zhenmin, UN G20 Sherpa, I congratulate Japan on a very successful G20 Summit in Osaka. I also thank Japan for its initiative to share the outcome of the G20 so timely on the margins of the HLPF.
Japan’s G20 presidency has prioritized the advancement of global solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges. The culmination of these efforts is the G20 Osaka Leaders’ Declaration.
The Declaration places a strong emphasis on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In its preamble, G20 leaders commit to further lead efforts to foster development and address other global challenges to pave the way toward an inclusive and sustainable world.
The outcome makes reference to the SDG Summit and High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development in September. It also looks forward to a successful Climate Action Summit of the UN Secretary-General, as well as the High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage. These references, and the endorsement of the Osaka Update on the G20 Action Plan on the 2030 Agenda, once again demonstrate the continued alignment of the G20 work with UN frameworks.

The collaboration between the G20 and the UN demonstrates the benefits of an inclusive multilateralism through the reaffirmation of the 2030 Agenda. Mobilizing G20 action on global development challenges has been at the heart of the UN’s engagement with the G20, focusing particularly on the needs of the most vulnerable countries and populations.
The Secretary-General attaches great importance to the strategic engagement of the UN system with the G20. Towards that objective, a UN Working Group on the G20, convened by the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, has been established.
Through this mechanism, the United Nations has actively participated in the work of the G20 this year. The UN system had advocated for the alignment of the G20 work with the 2030 Agenda and channelled the voice of the larger UN membership to the G20. Sustainable development, climate change, future of work, human capital investment and financing for development were the focus areas for our engagement with the G20.
The Secretary -General had very fruitful engagements in Osaka. At the Summit, he urged G20 leaders to accelerate actions to achieve carbon neutral economies by 2052 and commit to stronger commitments to achieve this objective. The Secretary-General also engaged G20 leaders on issues such as sustainable development, women’s economic empowerment, and digitalization.
In this connection, let me acknowledge once again the strong and proactive engagement and cooperation of the Japanese G20 Presidency with the United Nations.
We stand ready to support you in the next phase of your Presidency.
