Opening remarks at Business and the SDGs – Accelerating Transformation

Distinguished colleagues,

A warm welcome to all of you.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs is proud to co-organize this meeting of Chief Sustainability Officers and other Sustainability Champions at the 2018 High-level Political Forum.

I wish to express my gratitude to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development for their partnership and leadership in organizing today’s event.

Distinguished colleagues,

You are at the forefront of businesses responses to sustainable development, integrating sustainability into corporate strategies and decision-making.

You have a critical role to play in translating the global aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals into business solutions that have a positive effect for people and the planet, as well as for business.

We are now in the third year of implementing the 2030 Agenda. All stakeholders should have a sense of urgency in the realization of SDGs.

As Chief Sustainability Officers and Sustainability Champions, you are all critically positioned to make the business case for the Sustainable Development Goals, and to generate internal buy-in by your companies.

Your critical role in making this happen cannot be overemphasized.

Today, you will be sharing concrete experiences of how companies have been unpacking the complexity of the SDGs, how they are connecting the three dimensions of sustainable development and identifying impact opportunities.

You will also be discussing new ways to collaborate that can help maximize impact and drive transformations.

A message that we have been hearing repeatedly during this year’s HLPF is that the SDGs are an opportunity for new, multi-stakeholder partnerships. The business sector must remain a prominent player in this regard.

Distinguished colleagues,

Let’s be clear. The ambition of the SDGs must be matched by bold investments and business innovations.

For this reason, the discussion on how to develop ways of communicating SDG impact to generate and increase investors’ interests, is not only necessary, but essential.

In the past few days, both the Partnership Exchange and the SDG Business Forum have shared inspiring examples of how business is catalyzing progress. Today you have the opportunity to expand even more on how business innovation and expertise can address the global challenges the SDGs aim to tackle.

I look forward to the outcome of what I am sure will be a most fruitful discussion.

I wish this meeting a great success!

Thank you.
