National reports

Monitoring, assessment and reporting is one of the principle functions of the UN Forum on Forests. Voluntary national reports are a vital source of information for assessing progress towards implementation of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 and the United Nations Forest Instrument, which provide countries with a framework for promoting sustainable forest management. The Strategic Plan contains six Global Forest Goals and 26 associated targets, to be achieved by 2030. These Goals and their associated targets are at the heart of the Strategic Plan and are aimed at contributing to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Paris Agreement adopted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. National reports will provide the main source of information for the Forum to assess progress towards the achievement of the Global Forest Goals and targets, together with information from members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and other sources.

At the 13th session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF13) in May 2018, the Forum adopted the format for voluntary national reporting and invited Members States of the Forum to submit their voluntary national reports by mid November 2019. Explanatory notes were subsequently prepared for consideration by the 14th session of the Forum (UNFF14) in May 2019.
