Closing remarks Joint Meeting of the Economic and Social Council and the Second Committee of the General Assembly

Madam President of ECOSOC, Mr. Chairman,Distinguished Panelists, Moderator of the Second Committee, and Sophia,Distinguished Delegates,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you all for the very inspiring discussion at the joint meeting entitled “The Future of Everything- Sustainable Development in the Age of Rapid Technological Change”.

We are indeed at a critical juncture: facing both unprecedented challenges and unique opportunities, with the chance of widely contrasting futures.

Technological innovation has been a main driver of economic growth and improvements in living standards over time.

On a few occasions, technological change in history has been revolutionary, transforming the structure of societies and economies.

Recent breakthroughs in so many areas of technology, along with the growing ability of artificial intelligence to autonomously solve complex problems, may bring on a new industrial revolution.

This time, the changes could be fundamentally different from the previous industrial revolutions of the past two centuries.

New technologies are profoundly reshaping our economy and society, by revolutionizing health care, changing how products are made, and addressing many of the problems of industrialization, in countries rich and poor.

The influence of technology on our future is not preordained, but can be reshaped by institutions and by proactive policies - locally, nationally, and globally.

The general policy stance should be to embrace and direct these new technologies.

Proactive policies are needed. They must ensure that technology gains are broadly shared, equipping people with the skills and tools necessary to reap the benefits of this advancement.

We have at our disposal, for the first time in human history, sufficient resources and advanced technologies to eradicate poverty, dramatically reduce inequalities, and put the planet on a trajectory of sustainable development.

To do so, we must unleash and harness all new technologies to the service of people.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We already have frameworks in place, endorsed by all UN Member States just a few years back, that is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

At the core of the 2030 Agenda is the determination to eradicate poverty and hunger in all their forms, secure a sustainable planet, and build peaceful, inclusive societies as a foundation for ensuring lives of dignity for all. Technology should help us achieve these goals. International cooperation is needed to promote technological innovation to this end.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We cannot stop the future. But we can shape it together.

Thank you.
