Next steps
The report by the High-Level Expert Group is a milestone in a generational project in moving Beyond GDP.
Three concrete next steps follow the report:
-
Intergovernmental process
In line with the Pact for the Future, Member States agreed to “Initiate a United Nations-led intergovernmental process following the completion of the work of the independent high-level expert group in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Statistical Commission, international financial institutions, multilateral development banks and regional commissions, in line with their respective mandates, on measures of progress on sustainable development that complement or go beyond gross domestic product, considering the recommendations of the Secretary- General’s high-level expert group.” In addition, civil society can play an important role in this process, and already provided critical insights to the work of the High-Level Expert Group.
The process will be co-facilitated by Guyana and Spain.
-
Piloting
Country-level piloting and testing led by the United Nations will be initiated over the next months to support countries who would like to take the next steps in their journey to move Beyond GDP on the statistical and policy side.
-
Implementation
Implementation of the Expert Group’s recommendation, in particular, the development of national dashboards on Beyond GDP and other proposals can be taken up by key stakeholders – governments, multilateral system, international statistical community, civil society, media, and researchers – immediately and other potential technical innovations.
