Launch of a new phase: Advancing the development and use of metrics for policymaking Beyond GDP
Interest in measuring progress Beyond GDP continues to grow across the international community. The publication of Counting What Counts: A Compass of Progress for People and Planet by the High-Level Expert Group on Beyond GDP has provided a common framework for discussion, while an intergovernmental process on Beyond GDP continues to deliberate how to advance this agenda politically.
Already, many countries are seeking practical support to explore, test and apply Beyond GDP approaches within their national contexts. In response, the United Nations is launching a new phase of work that provides a demand-driven platform for country engagement, experimentation and peer learning. The initiative aims to help countries strengthen both the production and use of Beyond GDP metrics while generating practical experience that can inform the broader international discussion.
The initiative is organized jointly by UNCTAD, UNDP and DESA, in coordination with the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, UN Regional Commissions, Resident Coordinator Offices and UN Country Teams.
Country Testing and Experimentation
Countries interested in advancing Beyond GDP approaches will have the opportunity to participate in pilot activities tailored to their specific needs and capacities. Based on the priorities of the countries, these activities may include assessing data availability, compiling indicators, strengthening statistical systems, exploring national priorities and testing how Beyond GDP metrics can be applied in policymaking processes. Particular emphasis will be placed on translating measurement into practical policy use and generating lessons that can be shared across countries.
Community of Practice
The initiative will establish a global Community of Practice bringing together policymakers, national statistical offices, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders working on Beyond GDP from across the world. Through webinars, technical exchanges and collaborative learning activities, participants will be able to share experiences, discuss challenges and learn from emerging practices across different national contexts.
Beyond GDP Data for Action Hub
The Beyond GDP Data for Action Hub will support the initiative by providing access to resources, tools, guidance materials, country experiences and good practices. The Hub will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and help connect countries seeking practical solutions and partners working on related initiatives.
Shaping the Future Together
As countries gain experience in testing and applying Beyond GDP metrics, their lessons and insights will contribute to the ongoing international conversation on measuring progress. This demand-driven initiative is designed not only to support national action, but also to ensure that practical country experience helps inform the continued development of Beyond GDP approaches globally.
