GENERAL SEGMENT

The general segment, to be held from 23 to 27 July 2012, will review nine agenda items on a wide range of issues pertaining to the work of the United Nations system in the field of development.  There are three main types of discussions that take place during the general segment, namely:

  • The review of the reports of the Council’s subsidiary and expert bodies

These include the reports of all Functional Commissions, the Regional Commissions and the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, as well as expert and ad hoc bodies.  The consideration of these reports is organized under two clusters: economic and environmental questions and social and human rights questions.

  • The system-wide coordination and review of specific development issues

This year, the Council will inter alia review:

    • The implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries and the follow-up to the 2011 Istanbul Conference
    • Mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system
    • The work of the United Nations inter-agency task force on tobacco control
    • The follow-up to the World Summit on Information Society.

  • Special country or regional issues
