Solutions: Capacity-building, Education and advocacy, Sustainable cities and communities

APSWDP’s key mandate on “Promoting Social Work Education for Sustainable Development” has initiated various social action-based initiatives inspired by the UNESCO Global Action Programme (2015-19) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), mainly Building Capacities of Educators and Trainers, Empowering and Mobilizing Youth and Accelerating Solutions at Local Level.

Since the inception of APSWDP, Climate Change Education, Advocacy and Climate Action have been their priority areas with respect to three GAP commitments in partnership with The Climate Reality Project India. APSWDP team has also been trained in global training workshop which has further disseminated knowledge and know how at the grassroot level, by having firmly believed in “Think Global and Act Local”.

APSWDP has addressed, outreached and worked with various stakeholder, more prominently Youth, Educators (teachers and academia) and civil society organizations through capacity building & training programmes, promoting social actions at local level including behavior modification (climate-friendly behavior), virtual dialogues, panel discussions and youth-centric dialogues on the Sustainable Development Goals.

APSWDP has organized five programmes addressing SDG-11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and twenty five programmes with respect to SDG 13 Climate Action covering 2006 participants of diverse background including college and university youth, educators and representatives of civil society grass root network and government.

APSWDP has created wider awareness among school, college & university youth through National Service Scheme (NSS), trained teachers & educators through teachers training programme from various prominent educational institutions. As a part of this, APSWDP has 9 Climate Leaders trained in global trainings conducted by the Climate Reality Project under the dynamic inspiration from Noble Laureate Al Gore at Melbourne, New Delhi and through a virtual platform. Also, APSWDP has got a network of more 100 climate leaders from northern India to work in close partnership at grass root level on climate-friendly behavior modification and lifestyle.

APSWDP has organized training workshops on E-Waste, Circular Economy, Climate Change Education, Basics of Climate Change and the SDGs. Recently, APSWDP has observed 24 Hours of Reality through a Virtual Chandigarh Climate Dialogue -2020 in which 159 participants from diverse background has participated and was inaugurated by Mr. Mustaq Ahmad Memon, as a Regional Coordinator for Resource Efficiency in Asia Pacific Office, UNEP.

Gauging effectiveness of awareness programmes is a bit difficult in assessing the impacts and is very subjective as it is related with behavior and habits of individuals. But, continuity in such approach is very much required to maintain the momentum.

The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down their momentum in the areas of outreach but adopting available digital technologies has made APSWDP more responsive in the pandemic period for maintaining a sustenance approach.
