Tawakkol Karman, winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, is known as “The Mother of the Revolution” in Yemen, where she was at the forefront of the struggle for human rights and women’s participation in peacebuilding, organizing non-violent protests that swelled in size and became part of the 2011 Arab Spring movements.

The battle that women must wage today should not be one aimed at personal gain but one that will free societies from fear, poverty and tyranny. The promotion and protection of human rights, freedom and democracy are the right way for women to obtain equal rights.
