The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) conducts research on disarmament and security with the aim of assisting UN Member States and the international community at large in their disarmament thinking, decisions and efforts.
- United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
UNITAR was established in 1965 as an autonomous body within the United Nations with the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the Organization through appropriate training and research. The Institute carries out a wide range of training programmes and develops pedagogical materials, i.a. on multilateral diplomacy, international cooperation, peacekeeping, and social and economic development.
- The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)
UNRISD carries out research on the social dimensions of contemporary problems affecting development. Through its research, UNRISD stimulates dialogue and contributes to policy debates within and outside the United Nations system.

The UNU serves as a think tank for the UN, a community of international scholars, a link between the UN and the international academic world, and builds capacity in developing countries.
