Water and energy inter-relations in Ibero-America are diverse, complex and intense. Current trends suggest that this interdependence will be subject to increased stress in the future mainly because of population growth and urbanization; increasing economic growth; competition for water in river basins with concentrated economic development; and tendencies towards increasing the water intensity of energy production and the energy intensity of water provision for different uses – all this in the context of climate change.
The side event will focus on the Ibero-American Water Directors Conference (CODIA) and its activities, analyzing the experiences on water management and innovation, and the R&D needs related to water and energy.
During this side event, speakers from governments will present the main challenges and opportunities for water management in Ibero-America in relation to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first part of the side event will introduce the CODIA and activities. The second part will be a panel discussing the experiences on water and energy management and innovation. Finally, there will be a brief presentation of the Monograph on Water and Energy delivered by WCCE Aquae Foundation and UNW-DPAC.
Participants invited include Liana Ardiles, Director General of Water; Ramiro Aurín, Associate Editor RIBAGUA; Manuel Omedas, Head of the Planning Office of CH Ebro; Vicente Andreu, president of the ANA, Brazil; José Elias Chedid Abraham, Director General of the Agency of Lerma Santiago Pacific, Mexico; César Lanza, Tecnova Director, Technical Committee Water, Energy and Environment CICCP, Spain; Josefina Maestu, Director of the United Nations Office to Support the.
