Five more days to negotiate on Rio+20

Representatives from governments who were negotiating the Rio+20 outcome document agreed to add five additional days to their deliberations in order to bridge differences that have hampered progress to date. The move came on 4 May as the latest round of negotiations concluded with some progress made, but much work left outstanding. The five added negotiating days are set for 29 May to 2 June. Youth forum: UN labour chief warns of ‘growing discontent’

The head of the UN labour agency warned of a “growing disconnect between people and policy, people and government.” “Many people are saying ‘you are not taking my situation into account’ – this is particularly true in the case of youth and young people, whose feeling is often: ‘OK, you talk about our issues but we’re not there in the process,’” the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Juan Somavia, said at the opening of an ILO Youth Employment Forum in Geneva. Concrete commitments called for ahead of Rio+20

United Nations top officials stressed the need to achieve concrete commitments ahead of the Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) in Brazil, and called on countries to make progress in the last round of negotiations before the Conference starts next month. “There are still some crucial decisions to be made,” said Abdulaziz Al-Nasser.

Youth asked to “make some noise” ahead of Rio+20

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked young people from all over the world to “make some noise” to help accelerate progress on the negotiations of the United Nations Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) which will take place in Brazil next month. “The truth is I am disappointed with the negotiations. Human and natural capital as important as financial capital
