Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on attack against Jordanian border post

The Secretary-General condemns today's terrorist attack against a Jordanian border guard post at the north-eastern border with Syria.  He offers his condolences to the families of the victims and reiterates his solidarity with the Government and people of Jordan.

The Secretary-General is particularly concerned that the attack took place opposite an encampment where Syrian asylum seekers await entry into Jordan.  He commends Jordan for its continued commitment and efforts to uphold humanitarian principles.

The Secretary-General urges all Governments to strengthen their efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism, and to support the Government of Jordan in this context.
