The Secretary-General welcomes the unanimous adoption by the Security Council of resolution S/RES/2261 (2016), which was co-sponsored by all fifteen members. He is pleased by the strong commitment they have shown to the peaceful resolution of the armed conflict in Colombia.

As mandated by the Council and consistent with the request of the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), the Secretary-General will initiate preparations, including on the ground, so that a United Nations political mission can be fully operational when the final peace agreement is signed.

The Secretary-General welcomes the Council’s active interest in the contributions of the Members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to the Mission. In this context, he has requested Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman, who is representing him at the CELAC summit to be held in Quito, Ecuador, later this week, to engage with the Members of the regional body on their contributions to the UN mission.

Declaración atribuible al portavoz del Secretario General sobre Colombia

El Secretario General acoge con beneplácito la aprobación por unanimidad por el Consejo de Seguridad de la resolución S/RES/2261 (2016), que fue copatrocinada por todos los quince miembros. Él se complace del firme compromiso que han demostrado con la resolución pacífica del conflicto armado en Colombia.

Conforme a lo dispuesto por el Consejo y de conformidad con la solicitud del Gobierno de Colombia y las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP), al Secretario General iniciará preparativos, también sobre el terreno, para que una misión política de las Naciones Unidas pueda estar en pleno funcionamiento cuando se firme el acuerdo de paz definitivo.

El Secretario General acoge con beneplácito el interés activo del Consejo en las contribuciones de los Miembros de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y del Caribe (CELAC) a la Misión. En este contexto, ha solicitado al Secretario General Adjunto para Asuntos Políticos Jeffrey Feltman, quien le representará en la cumbre de la CELAC, que se celebrará en Quito, Ecuador, a finales de esta semana, que inicie conversaciones con los miembros del organismo regional en torno a sus contribuciones a la Misión.
