The Secretary-General continues to follow with concern the political crisis in Burundi, which threatens to undo more than a decade of work to consolidate peace and reconciliation in the country. In this respect, he welcomes the communiqué of the meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council held on 13 June at the level of Heads of State and Government. With the communiqué, the African Union provided a clear way forward towards peaceful and credible elections in Burundi.
The Secretary-General has requested his Special Representative and Head of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa, Abdoulaye Bathily, to offer good offices in Burundi in support of regional efforts to reduce tensions and help Burundians peacefully settle their differences. Special Representative Bathily will work closely with the African Union, the East African Community and the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region. He will arrive in Bujumbura on Sunday, 21 June.
The Secretary-General wishes to express deep gratitude to his Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Said Djinnit, for his tireless efforts impartially facilitating the dialogue among Burundian stakeholders during May and June of this year.
As elections draw near, the Secretary-General calls on all Burundian political leaders to address the current political crisis with the highest sense of responsibility. He urges them to resume political dialogue earnestly with a view to creating an environment conducive for peaceful, credible and inclusive elections.

Le Secrétaire général continue de suivre avec préoccupation la crise politique au Burundi, qui menace de ruiner plus d'une décennie de travail pour consolider la paix et la réconciliation dans le pays. À cet égard, il se réjouit du communiqué issu de la réunion du Conseil de paix et sécurité de l’Union africaine qui s'est tenue le 13 juin au niveau des chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement. Avec le texte du communiqué, l'Union africaine éclaire la voie vers des élections pacifiques et crédibles au Burundi.
Le Secrétaire général a demandé à son Représentant spécial et chef du Bureau régional des Nations Unies pour l'Afrique centrale, Abdoulaye Bathily, d'offrir de bons offices au Burundi en appui aux efforts régionaux visant à réduire les tensions et à aider les Burundais à régler leurs différends pacifiquement. Le Représentant spécial Bathily travaillera en étroite collaboration avec l'Union africaine, la Communauté est-africaine et la Conférence internationale pour la région des Grands Lacs. Il arrivera à Bujumbura le dimanche 21 juin.
Le Secrétaire général souhaite exprimer sa profonde gratitude à son Envoyé spécial pour la région des grands lacs, Said Djinnit, pour ses efforts inlassables, en mai et juin de cette année, en vue de facilité en toute impartialité le dialogue entre les parties prenantes burundaises.
A l’approche des élections, le Secrétaire général appelle tous les dirigeants politiques burundais à résoudre la crise politique actuelle avec le plus grand sens des responsabilités. Il les exhorte à sérieusement reprendre le dialogue politique en vue de créer un environnement propice à des élections pacifiques, crédibles et inclusives.
