Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Colombia {scroll down for Spanish}

The Secretary-General welcomes the agreement reached in Havana on 16 May between the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) on the subject of illicit drugs.  A stepped up effort under this agreement to bring alternative development to regions plagued by illicit crops should mean a better life for many Colombians and help counter the crime and violence associated with the trade in illegal narcotics.

The Secretary-General commends the parties and encourages them to maintain the momentum in the peace talks. 

Declaración atribuible al Portavoz del Secretario General

El Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas acoge con beneplácito el acuerdo que se logró en La Habana el pasado 16 de mayo entre el Gobierno colombiano y las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC-EP) en el tema de drogas ilícitas. Los nuevos esfuerzos que se desarrollarán  bajo dicho acuerdo llevarán desarrollo alternativo a las regiones asoladas por los cultivos ilícitos y deberán traducirse en una vida mejor para un gran número de colombianos y colombianas, ayudando así, a contrarrestar el crimen y la violencia relacionados con al tráfico de drogas ilícitas.

El Secretario General felicita a las partes y las anima a mantener el impulso en las conversaciones de paz.
