Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Walid Al-Moualem, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Walid Al-Moualem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Syria, to discuss the devastating situation in the country. 

The Secretary-General stressed that there was no military solution to the conflict and that the Government had to fulfil its responsibility to engage constructively in the political process. He noted that the creation of extremism and terrorism in the country was largely a consequence of the lack of political dialogue.  The Secretary-General expressed the hope that the Government of Syria would work closely and collaboratively with his Special Envoy for Syria.

The Secretary-General expressed the hope that the Government of Syria would allow unfettered humanitarian access to all hard-to-reach and besieged areas in the country.
