The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe.

They discussed the plight of migrants risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean and noted the need for creating a political environment that sustainably addresses discrimination and intolerance faced by migrants and their families.

Turning to the post-2015 sustainable development deliberations, the Secretary-General noted that the Council of Europe can help build momentum in support of a truly transformative development agenda. He also welcomed the actions taken by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to address violent extremism and radicalization leading to terrorism.

The Secretary-General and Mr. Jagland also exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine.
