Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with His Excellency Mr. Aguila Saleh Essa, President of the Libyan House of Representatives

The Secretary-General met today with Mr. Aguila Saleh Essa, President of the Libyan House of Representatives on the margins of the summit of the League of Arab States.
 
The Secretary-General expressed condolences for the recent terrorist attack in al-Qubba, where 44 innocent civilians lost their lives. The highest number of fatalities of any single act of terrorism in Libya.
 
The Secretary-General thanked the President of the House of Representatives for his personal engagement and support to the Libyan Dialogue process, which is the only option to end the political and security crisis and counter the terrorist threat in Libya.
 
The Secretary-General also expressed his deep concern at the growing terrorist threat in Libya, which should be condemned in the strongest possible terms and should be fought with determination. The Secretary-Geneal explained that, as international partners, we must do all we can to empower Libyans to confront terrorism.
 
The Secretary-General also welcomed the Security Council Resolution adopted on Friday, which called on the Sanctions Committee to swiftly consider exemptions to the arms embargo in support of the National Army’s fight against Da’esh.
 
The Secretary-General and President of the Libyan House of Representatives discussed the Libyan political process, and agreed that Libyamust unite through a government of national unity to fight terrorism with the international community’s support. The longer unity takes the more space for Daesh and other extremist organizations to gain influence.
 
The Secretary-General stressed that we not lose momentum in the political process, and that we stand resolute in the face of any challenges. He also asked that dialogue reconvene by 6 April 2015.
