Q: [question in French on the Secretary-General’s visit to the Horn of Africa]
SG: Permettez-moi de répondre en anglais. I am visiting these countries of the Horn of Africa. There are of course many challenges, politically and economically – and again terrorism. There are a lot of problems here. But at the same time there are a lot of opportunities for the better advancement of development and political stability. One particular concern is the situation in Somalia. We sincerely hope that the leaders in Somalia are really united so that they can bring peace and stability and livelihoods for their own people. That is why the United Nations and also all international partners like the African Union, European Union, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank are now visiting together as a way of demonstrating our solidarity for people in the Horn of Africa and particularly Somalia.
We are very happy to work with Djibouti because you have shown such great, generous contributions and you have also realized political stability in this country. I hope that you will continue to contribute to stability and peace in this region. The UN is ready to work with Djibouti.
I am very much encouraged that international development banks, multilateral development banks, and the European Union and World Bank have shown such great support to provide financial support in the amount of all together US$8 billion. This will be used for the overall economic and social development, providing livelihoods and good job opportunities and the social and political development of this region. We are very much committed to the countries of this region.
I had a very good meeting with the IGAD Foreign Ministers two days ago in Addis Abeba. We are also working very hard to put an end to this continuing epidemic, Ebola outbreak in three West African countries. This is our top priority at this time. I sincerely hope that the whole international community will provide generous support so that we, first of all, stop this virus, treat those people affected, ensure stability in those countries and prevent the further spread of the virus to other countries. Thank you very much.
