Note to correspondents regarding questions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Notes to correspondents

Following questions about the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, had the following to say:

"You will have seen that on Saturday, we issued a readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The readout mentioned a letter that was handed over to the Secretary-General. In answer to questions raised, I would like to clarify that the letter received was only a formal thank-you letter from Mr. Kim Jong Un, First Secretary of the Workers’ Party of the DPRK, to the Secretary-General, thanking him for the message the Secretary-General had sent recently on the occasion of the Anniversary of the Founding of the DPRK.

There has been some speculation that the letter contains substantive issues including an invitation to the Secretary-General to visit the DPRK. Such speculation is totally groundless.”
