Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua.

Their discussions focused on Nicaragua`s progress towards reaching the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the importance of shaping the post-2015 development agenda.

On the issue of climate change, the Secretary-General welcomed the President´s acceptance of his invitation to attend the Climate Summit in New York on 23 September.

The Secretary-General praised Nicaragua’s commitment to renewable energy, taking note of the country’ goal of having 97 per cent of its energy come from renewable sources by the year 2028.

They also exchanged views on the peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
